You may need to install the “No CD Crack”. Do not worry. It does not make your game illegal. It just makes the game run without CD/DVD. Here are the steps:
1. Install your Command and Conquer Generals (CnCG).
2. Install your Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour (CnCGZH).
3. Apply CnCG patch 1.8. You can download it here.
4. Apply CnCGZH path 1.04. You can download it here.
5. Download the no CD patch from here.

6. Open your CnCG folder
7. Rename 'generals.exe' into 'generals.ori.exe.'
8. Unrar (open or double click) the file you have just downloaded.
Note: If you can't open the file, you need to download 7-Zip from http://www.7-zip.org.
9. You will find 'Command & Conquer(tm) Generals' in the file. Double click the folder.
10. You will find 'generals.exe' in the folder. Click and drag it to your CnCG folder.
11. You will see that file 'generals.exe' is now in your CnCG folder.
12. Open your CnCGZH folder.
13. Find and rename your 'game.dat' into 'game.ori.dat'.
14. Find and rename your 'generals.exe' into 'generals.ori.exe'.
15. Go back to your open 'CommandAndConquerTheFirstDecadev1.0NoDVDFixedexeEng
.rar'.
16. Click the Folder icon with 3 dots ('...') above 'generals.exe'. It will return you to the upper folder, where you can find 'Command & Conquer(tm) Generals Zero Hour' folder.
17. Double click 'Command & Conquer(tm) Generals Zero Hour' folder. You will find 'game.dat' and 'generals.exe' in that folder.
18. Click once 'game.dat', press 'SHIFT' while 'game.dat' is highlighted', and still hold 'SHIFT' while you select 'generals.exe'.
19. Drag those two files to your CnCGZH folder.
20. Set compatibility to Windows XP SP3. Not doing this may cause your shell maps (the animation after the introduction movie) to stop working Not fatal.
